Frequently Asked Questions
Honest answers to real questions about reef keeping, copepod culturing, and marine aquaculture in Central Texas. No perfect tank fantasy – just practical guidance based on actual experience.
How long do your copepods actually last in my tank?
In a refugium or established tank with hiding spaces, copepods can reproduce and maintain populations for months. In fish-only tanks with predators like mandarins or wrasses, they’ll provide active feeding for 1-2 weeks. Our cultures are specifically adapted to Central Texas water parameters, which improves survival rates compared to shipped cultures from other regions.
Reality check: Don’t expect to see them crawling around after adding mandarins – that’s normal. The goal is providing consistent nutrition, not maintaining visible populations in predator tanks.
Why can’t I just order clownfish whenever I want them?
Fish breeding isn’t like ordering from Amazon. Clownfish spawn on their own schedule – usually every 2-3 weeks if conditions are right. Then fry survival depends on water conditions, feeding success, disease prevention, and honestly, pure luck. I’ve had batches where 200 fry survived and batches where zero made it past day 10.
Why the waitlist matters: Every fish that makes it to the waitlist is healthy, eating prepared foods, and properly sized. No rushing fish to market because someone wants to buy one today. Learn more about our authentic breeding approach.
Do you deliver to my area in the Austin region?
Thursday delivery runs cover Greater Austin including Round Rock, Cedar Park, Leander, and Austin proper. We also serve surrounding areas like Georgetown, Hutto, Manor, and parts of Kyle/Buda. Order by Wednesday noon for Thursday delivery.
Delivery fee: Usually $5-15 depending on distance and order size. Large orders or multiple stops can sometimes qualify for free delivery. Contact us for specific delivery availability to your location.
What makes your consultation different from YouTube videos or forums?
I share the real stuff – the failures, the expensive mistakes, the equipment that looked great on paper but performed poorly in practice. You get honest advice from someone who’s actually dealing with Austin’s high pH water, summer humidity issues, and finding decent marine supplies locally.
No perfect tank syndrome here: My tanks have algae sometimes, equipment fails, and fish die. That’s real reef keeping. I help you succeed despite the inevitable challenges, not pretend they don’t exist. Available in-person for Greater Austin or remote consultation. Check our consultation services for pricing.
How are your cultures different from mail-order copepods?
Our copepods are adapted to Central Texas water parameters – they’re already used to our mineral content, pH levels (Austin’s treated water runs pH 9.6-9.7 with operational swings to 7.4-9.0), and temperature ranges. Plus, same-day local delivery means they arrive less stressed than cultures shipped across the country in variable conditions.
Mixed species advantage: We culture Tisbe, Apocyclops, and Oithona together. Different species occupy different niches in your tank, providing more feeding opportunities and better population sustainability.
Can you help with tank crashes or emergency situations?
Yes, but I’m not a miracle worker. For true emergencies (multiple fish dying, complete system crashes), I can often do same-day consultation calls to help troubleshoot immediate issues. However, the best approach is preventive consultation before problems start – it’s much cheaper than emergency livestock replacement.
Emergency reality: If fish are dying, act fast with proven treatments (check our recommended Humblefish resources). Don’t wait for consultations when livestock is at immediate risk.
What should I expect from Austin area tap water for reef tanks?
Austin’s treated municipal water runs pH 9.6-9.7 consistently (Austin Water 2023 data), with raw source water at pH 8.1-8.3. Our Pflugerville operational experience shows broader swings pH 7.4-9.0 during seasonal changes. High calcium and magnesium levels actually benefit marine systems, but the elevated pH requires careful RO/DI system maintenance and alkalinity management.
Local considerations: You’ll replace RO membranes more frequently than coastal hobbyists, but our mineral content means less supplementation needed. Read our detailed RO/DI Water System Guide for Austin-specific guidance.
Do you offer any guarantees on livestock?
DOA (Dead on Arrival) policy covers livestock that arrives deceased with photo documentation within 8 hours of delivery. However, I can’t guarantee fish will thrive in your specific tank conditions – too many variables are outside my control.
What I can promise: Every fish that leaves here is healthy, eating well, and properly acclimated to Central Texas water parameters. The rest is up to your tank conditions and husbandry practices.
How much should I budget for starting a reef tank in Austin?
For a basic 40-gallon reef setup with quality equipment: $800-1500 to start, plus $50-100/month ongoing for electricity, salt, supplements, and occasional livestock replacement. Austin’s hard water means investing in quality RO/DI systems is critical.
Hidden costs in our area: Summer cooling (expect $40-80/month extra electricity), RO membrane replacement every 8-12 months instead of 12-18, and potential livestock shipping during extreme heat. Budget 20-30% more than online calculators suggest for Texas conditions.
What’s the best way to get started with copepod culturing at home?
Start simple: 2-liter soda bottles, airline tubing for gentle aeration, and basic phytoplankton food. Don’t overthink it initially. I’ve crashed more cultures by over-engineering the setup than by keeping it simple. Room temperature works fine for most species in Texas.
Reality check: You will crash cultures. I still do occasionally. The key is learning from failures and maintaining multiple cultures so one crash doesn’t eliminate your population. Read our complete copepod culturing guide for detailed setup instructions.
Can you help me join the local Austin reef community?
Absolutely! The Austin reef community is active and welcoming. I participate in Austin Reefers, ATX Reefer Crew, and The Coral Vixens Facebook groups. Texas coral shows happen several times per year and are great for meeting local hobbyists who understand our unique challenges.
Community benefits: Equipment sales, local pickup options, shared experiences with Central Texas water conditions, and real friendships with people who understand why your electric bill is so high. Check our local community resources for group links.
